Introduction
Youth Space seeks to support young people (aged 11-18) from across Cardiff in discovering themselves, their communities and the world through informal learning rooted in the Methodist Church.
We will do this by :-
Listening to young people and allowing their voices to direct the project throughout Cardiff
Providing a paid youth worker and dedicated Minister for Youth Work
Recruiting, training and supporting appropriate volunteers
Providing a safe space for young people to meet
The Vision of Youth Space is for it to be a community, By Young People, For Young People, For God. Through being Church it sets out to encourage the full participation of young people through Fun, Friends and Faith. As it grows, guided by our adult Vision Group we are keen to see the participation of young people in our decision processes grow. The first milestone in this process is the initial decoration of our premises which has been devised by the members of Youth Space1 prior to "Youth Space does decorating" in the Half Term of February 2010.
Youth Space has two sides to its work, we have a dedicated space in our centre on Cowbridge Road East which acts as Youth Centre, Training Facility, Offices and Resource Centre. Youth Space also organises larger events for young people of the Cardiff Methodist Circuit in consultation with the Cardiff Circuit Youth Workers' Forum to offer opportunities for young people from across Cardiff to get together.
Ian - Youth Worker to the Cardiff Methodist Circuit
Ian started in September 2009 as a Youth Worker for the Methodist Church in Cardiff. Stepping away from his previous employment as Deputy Technical Stage Manager to Sherman Cymru in Cardiff. Previously Ian was an active volunteer with Pitstop from UBU-SCA providing respite care for children and young people with physical and learning difficulties in the Bristol area. Ian has also worked on Sherman Cymru's Acting Out project providing life skills education and a formal qualification for those that do not learn well in a school environment through the medium of theatre.
Ian was brought up in the church through Wesley Caerphilly with its Sunday School, Shell group and Youth Club. He is also keen on developing appropriate music for worship and regularly plays the piano and organ in worship across Cardiff.
Whilst Ian can generally be found in Youth Space it's worth ringing/texting/e-mailing him first to make sure he's there if your planning a visit. He definitely does not work on a Monday though (apart from the ones he does).
When not in Youth Space Ian enjoys hill walking with his Digital Camera and taking landscape photographs. Or hiding in the woodland at the Amelia Trust Farm using his carpenty skills creating strange and wonderful new paths through the undergrowth.
Rev. Susan McIvor - Minister for Youth Work in Cardiff
Susan is an ordained minister in the Methodist Church of Great Britain. As well as Youth Space, Susan is also responsible for Radyr Methodist Church.
Susan has been in Cardiff for four years and before that was in Shropshire for 9 years.
Susan mainly takes responsibility for Youth Space volunteers. This includes safer recruitment, ongoing training and welfare. Susan has a certificate in Christian Youth work and certificate in Supervision. Susan has been actively working with young people for over 20 years. #
When not in Youth Space, Susan is actively learning to speak Welsh.
She is also our Safeguarding Officer.
Youth Support Worker (Student Placement)
Youth Space does not currently have anyone on a student placement with us
Volunteers - essential to our work
Our adult volunteers are essential to our work. Without them Youth Space could not plan or run any of its events, groups, meetings or really do anything that it does.
Volunteers come in all shapes and sizes and are members of any Methodist Church within Cardiff or have a sympathy with the work of Youth Space and the Methodist Church.
Some of our volunteers have been working with Circuit Youth and the Visioning for Youth Space since before the project really knew it existed, but we are always looking for and glad to meet new faces for our team. Volunteers receive training and support through Youth Space in order to help them do the jobs we ask of them, some coming weekly, some who always do the same events (such as Circuit Youth Weekends) and some who simply have a special skill that we know we can call on when we need to. (Cake makers, crafty people, drivers) Then there are all those people who work with Youth Space but not directly with young people (Management group, our Treasurer, prayer partners, Friends of Youth Space) who help Youth Space be what it is by giving what they can to the project in their own special ways.
Volunteers favourite things include EVERYTHING as each volunteer is unique. But most of all they seem to love spreading the word of Youth Space as far and wide as they can.
